Asian City in the Sky
Diane Dobson-Smith
FIRST PLACE AWARD WINNER
Artist Statement:
From Bishop Agobard of Lyon's city of Magonia (815), to Cloud City on the planet Bespin in the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back (1980), floating cities have sprung from human imagination onto pages and film. I was working with and developing a filter overlay which gives a background of crowded cities, one western and one oriental. I experimented with my own photographs of sky and clouds and the result is this.

Artist Statement:
What to the simple eye could be interpreted as just home decor, I felt this was a shrine-like display of embracing light energy. It called out to me and I had to draw it.

Artist Statement:
Gender Roles, Economy, Racial Bias, Social standards, Creed. We, as a species, have always been keen in spotting differences in our environment. Sadly this has lead to a compartmentalization of our identities based on a myriad of categories. In this fantastic allegory, I am representing embodiments of judgement, all advocating for their own agenda and passing scrutiny onto the judged one. Hanging the Damocle's swords over our heads waiting for the final call. We are all the judge, the jury and the executioner.
